How the junior section works
Our aim is to introduce juniors to the wonderful game of golf in a stimulating and enjoyable way. There is no age restriction for junior membership. Boys and girls have equal rights to enter our junior competitions.
We cover all the principle areas of golf from basic golfer’s code to putting, short game, long game and final playing on the course.
The junior section is always looking for new members, all ages and standards are acceptable, from complete beginners to low handicap players.
If you are a parent or grandparent how about getting the children involved, and maybe giving them membership as a birthday or Christmas present. It is the one present that will last a life time
We have a responsibility to the juniors to promote:
- Junior golf within the club
- a recognised Section
- representation on the management committee
- a welcoming environment
- basic teaching
- adopting Children in Golf Child Protection guidelines
- a junior coaching system to monitor/measure the junior’s progress
- a junior membership with minimum restrictions- regular competitions
The club has a junior organiser, Susan Anderson who is supported by Brendan Kelly and Paddy McDonagh. They work to organise competitions and activities for junior members in conjunction with the resident head professional, Seamus Duffy and Assistant Professional, Michael McGeady to provide opportunities for coaching and club representation.
In total there are over 50 members in the junior section and this number is growing rapidly.
Many juniors compete in weekly competitions at the club. The relaxed atmosphere, fantastic practice facilities and coaching available makes the junior section of OGC the best place to play and learn golf whatever your age or ability.
At OGC there are fantastic practice facilities available as well as the 18 hole golf course:
- Practice putting green
- Practice chipping green
- Practice bunkers
- Practice ground
- Sheltered teaching bays
- Indoor facilities with video analysis (on appointment)
Junior Coaching and Competitions
For the juniors who want to improve their game and lower their handicap there are coaching opportunities offered by professionals Seamus Duffy and Michael McGeady
Regular sessions run on Thursdays from 4pm, commencing in the spring time and running straight through to the end of august. The sessions are adapted for the beginner, improver and advanced players. This is an excellent way of getting into the game of golf at OGC.
The junior section organises competitions during the golfing season which vary between medal and stableford events. They hold an annual junior event in August and a range of competitions during the school summer holidays.
With the boys, juniors holding a handicap up to 24 are eligible to play in the weekly adult competitions for the junior prize. Those junior boys with a handicap up to 15 are eligible to play for the main prize and those junior boys with a handicap up to 5 are eligible to play in the adult teams.
With the girls, juniors holding a handicap up to 36 are eligible to play in the weekly ladies competitions and teams.
For those non members, juniors can join the summer camp which is a great pathway to learn the game of golf and become future members of the junior section.
